Coordinating Nesting Activity Monitoring in Guadeloupe

Coordinated monitoring of marine turtle nesting activity across the Guadeloupe archipelago.

This TOTM mission, supported by funding from DEAL Guadeloupe, aims to ensure continuity of scientific monitoring that is essential for assessing demographic trends and measuring the effectiveness of conservation actions. TOTM will coordinate the six associations of the Guadeloupe Marine Turtle Network that carry out beach monitoring:

  • Kap Natirel on the South Basse-Terre, South Grande-Terre and East Grande-Terre sectors;
  • Ecolambda on Marie-Galante;
  • Evasion Tropicale on the Cote-sous-le-Vent sector;
  • Totijon on North Basse-Terre;
  • Le Gaiac on North Basse-Terre;
  • Tite on La Desirade.

Nesting monitoring not only helps estimate population trends, but also provides active surveillance of nesting sites and the pressures affecting them, including urbanization, light pollution, erosion and habitat degradation. After two years without full implementation of the monitoring program, in 2024 and 2025, the current priority is to restore a sustainable annual monitoring system, which is essential for robust data and relevant management strategies.
