About Us

Our History

Trans Océans Tortues Marines (TOTM) is a non-profit association under the French Law of 1901 that brings together stakeholders from French territories to conserve marine turtles worldwide. It was founded in 2019 by these same stakeholders in order to implement recommendations that had been formulated over several years. Its legal status enables it to seek and manage the funding required to carry out these unifying national actions for marine turtle conservation.

Our Missions

  • Promoting, studying, and conserving marine turtles and their habitats,
  • Implementing actions in support of marine turtles based on priorities identified by scientific and technical groups specializing in marine turtle conservation. Action methods are selected by the association’s members and validated by the Board of Directors,
  • Supporting the implementation of cross-cutting actions at international (International Union for Conservation of Nature, International Sea Turtle Society, State of the World Sea Turtles…), inter-regional (OSPAR, Barcelona Convention…), national (Groupe Tortues Marines France, Société Herpétologique de France…), or supranational levels (Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles, Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network – WIDECAST, Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their Habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia – IOSEA…). These actions address marine turtles, their habitats, and/or the threats they face in French territories. This support may take various forms, including scientific, technical, logistical, and financial assistance,
  • Producing and disseminating educational materials and tools for the general public, schools, and young people.

How We Operate

TOTM places governance at the heart of its operations, guided by a commitment to transparent decision-making. Since 2022, TOTM’s governance has been structured around working committees, each composed of a Chair and a Vice-Chair, appointed by the Board of Directors following a voluntary application process.

Committee Chairs regularly report on their work to the association’s Executive Board. All materials and meeting minutes are made available to board members.

The committees are organized into two divisions: an “Actions” division, dedicated to TOTM’s projects, and a “Support and Development” division, focused on the structuring and strategic development of the association.

Since early 2024, the association has been supported by a full-time Project Officer, who is involved in all of the association’s projects.

Notre histoire

Association loi 1901, Trans Océans Tortues Marines (TOTM) regroupe les acteurs des territoires français pour la conservation des tortues marines à travers le monde. Son statut juridique lui permet de rechercher et gérer des financements nécessaires à l’accomplissement d’actions nationales fédératrices sur les tortues marines.

Nos missions

  • La promotion, l’étude et la conservation des tortues marines et de leurs habitats,
  • La mise en œuvre d’actions en faveur des tortues marines selon les priorités identifiées par les groupes scientifiques et techniques spécialisés dans la protection des tortues marines. Les méthodes d’actions seront choisies par les membres de l’association et validées par le Conseil d’Administration,
  • Le soutien à la mise en œuvre d’actions transversales aux échelles internationale (Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature, International Sea Turtle Society, State of the World Sea Turtles…), inter-régionale (OSPAR, Barcelone…), nationale (Groupe Tortues Marines Frances, Société Herpétologique de France…) ou supranationale (Mediterranean Conference on Marine Turtles, Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network (WIDECAST), Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their Habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia (IOSEA)…), menées sur les tortues marines, leurs habitats et/ou les menaces dans les territoires français. Ce soutien peut prendre différentes formes, notamment un appui scientifique, technique, logistique et financier,
  • La réalisation et la diffusion de supports et d’outils pédagogiques à l’attention du grand public, des structures scolaires et de la jeunesse en général.

Notre fonctionnement

TOTM place sa gouvernance au cœur de son fonctionnement avec comme précepte la transparence des décisions. Depuis 2022 la gouvernance de TOTM s’organise autour de commissions de travail composées d’un.e Président.e et d’un.e Vice-Président.e par commission nommé.e.s par le Conseil d’Administration sur la base d’une candidature volontaire.

Les Président.e.s de commission communiquent régulièrement sur le contenu de leurs travaux auprès du Bureau de l’association. Ils mettent à disposition l’ensemble des contenus pour les administrateurs et les comptes-rendus de leurs réunions de travail.

Les commissions sont regroupées en deux pôles : un pôle « Actions » relatif aux projets de TOTM et un pôle « Support et développement » qui travaille à la structuration et aux stratégies de l’association.

Depuis début 2024, l’association est épaulée par une salariée « Chargée de mission » qui est impliquée sur tous les projets de l’association.
