Developing Methods to Assess Pain and Stress in Marine Turtles
Improving the clinical assessment of pain and stress in marine turtles.
Few veterinarians and caretakers currently have expertise in marine turtle health parameters, especially in managing stress and pain.
Because these parameters are difficult to quantify, the systematic use of analgesics when marine turtles arrive at rehabilitation centers should be considered. The objective of this action is therefore to study stress and pain in marine turtles and propose solutions to address them.
As a first step, TOTM is working on a literature review about marine turtles and:
- acute stress
- chronic stress and keratinized tissues
- pain
Research directions are proposed following this review, and TOTM is currently looking for partners to develop them further.
