Claire Jean is a research engineer and Head of the Science and Outreach Department at Kelonia, the Sea Turtle Observatory of La Réunion. Trained as an Agro-Fisheries Engineer, she began her career at Ifremer Indian Ocean as a Volontaire Civil à l’Aide Technique (VCAT), before joining Kelonia in 2007 as a project manager. In this role, she coordinated the development of the TORSOOI database, a key tool for sea turtle conservation, which she has since managed and further developed.
As a specialist in databases and GIS, she contributes to data sharing with national (SINP, SEXTANT) and international (SWOT, IOSEA) information systems. Claire has also played a key role in the development of a photo-identification method for sea turtles and actively participates in international working groups on this topic.
With more than 15 years of experience, she now coordinates standardised monitoring protocols for sea turtle populations in the Indian Ocean, while also promoting scientific outreach and public engagement.
