Indicators and Standard Minimums

Assess the conservation status of marine turtle populations and their habitats by optimizing data collection methods and developing indicators to inform and raise awareness among public authorities.

Indicators that reflect the health of turtles also provide insight into the state of marine ecosystems. An indicator is a measure that synthesizes a multitude of biodiversity data to illustrate complex phenomena in a simplified and accessible way.

It helps inform not only the scientific community but also policymakers and the general public about changes in turtle populations, the impacts of threats they face, and the quality of their habitats. The information comes primarily from field stakeholders.

These data, collected and recorded according to defined protocols and standards, are then compiled, analyzed, and synthesized to maximize their value and accessibility.

Creating and providing an online platform will enable an inventory of the protocols used across French territories.

TOTM’s complementary role will be to strengthen communication between field actors and the organizations producing the indicators.

Objective 1: Align data collection protocols with standard minimums and centralize the data

  • Share data collection protocols among stakeholders
  • Establish standard minimums to be applied in data collection protocols

Objective 2: Contribute to international indicators (OSPAR, Barcelona Convention, IUCN SSC-MTSG, SWOT)

  • Disseminate marine turtle indicator results and participate in indicators useful for international stakeholders and decision-makers

Objective 3: Develop new indicators

  • Bring stakeholders together to define new national common indicators (coastal habitats and fishing impacts) and ensure consultation when establishing standard minimums
